How do you become an influencer?

The influencer marketing industry offers huge opportunities – both for creators and for companies that want to advertise their products effectively.

The influencer profession isn’t losing popularity, and the market will always have room for more creators with a unique creative style. With billions, millions, thousands or sometimes even just hundreds of people following a social media profile, you can count on creative work, freedom in how you do your job and earnings tied directly to measurable results in how effective your advertising and image messages are.

Unique faces of the brand

It is worth noting that brands long ago began investing in “their own faces” – famous ambassadors who put their names to their products and recommended using them. Although influencers have been part of our everyday lives only relatively recently, the potential of the profession was recognised years ago.

The rapid growth of social media means that it is not only worth investing in influencer marketing now – it is increasingly a must. This young profession can generate enormous revenue – both for influencers and for the companies that use their services. Companies are increasingly entering into recurring or long-term partnerships with creators, enriching their existing online marketing in the process.

A school for influencers

In principle, anyone can become an influencer. In this particular industry you don’t need any special education or training for the job. All it takes is to work consciously with ideas, create content and then show it to an online community – on at least one social media platform of your choice.

You need to build up your following steadily and try to engage your followers in the various activities you run on your profile, e.g. by organising competitions or Q&A series. That way, from the very start, your profile will have advertising potential based not only on the number of followers but also on their high quality – people who are active, interested in the subject and who react to the content you publish.

An authentic tone to the message is very important. The audience must have no doubt that a product recommended by an influencer is as valuable as the creator makes it out to be. Advertising messages must be natural and consistently interesting. It is important that the overall message is coherent and credible.

The influencer’s world of luxury

For many people, the influencer profession is synonymous with luxury – at work and in life. What comes to mind is an image of little effort put into the job, translating into hefty profits out of all proportion to the amount of work done. So where do you start on the influencer’s career path, and how do you leave your mark?

A niche as the way to success

Every topic is a good one, but not every topic is equally fashionable, interesting or catchy! That’s a good thing, because in an age of media noise, niche subjects still turn out to be high-value content. It is worth building on them if you want less competition and an element of surprise from the start.

An unbroken bond

In an influencer’s work, ongoing dialogue with the audience is very important. After all, the whole point is to win the support and recognition of your community, and to find a common language. Online messages need regularity – so that every member of the audience feels, in a way, looked after. An influencer who goes quiet becomes, in a way, a “stranger” to their followers. A bond with the audience that isn’t nurtured will sooner or later be broken.

Online footprints

Let others notice you online – visit other influencers’ profiles and comment on posts on profiles and forums frequented by a wide range of potential audiences (including yours). You could try partnering with a popular creator – this will certainly speed up the growth of your advertising profile. You will present yourself to a larger audience, so there is also a higher chance that some of them will take an interest in what you do.

Private relationships

Respect your audience – their wish and need for contact with you as an authority or idol. Always try to react and reply to private messages and public comments that call for a response. That way you build your audience’s goodwill and strengthen your bond with your followers.

A stroke of luck

Given the dynamics of the influencer profession and of a changing world – as you can see, there is no recipe for success in the influencer marketing industry. Even if you apply the best advice and tips, and have traits that at first glance may help a career in this profession develop, as in any other industry or business – there is no 100% certainty of success. A stroke of luck may turn out to be the key.
